The following guide provides instructions on using the Pecha Kucha feature (20 slides or images that are displayed for 20 seconds each) in VoiceThread. Option 1 requires the instructor to set up the Pecha Kucha requirements in the VoiceThread Assignment Builder. Option 2 requires students to choose the Pecha Kucha settings when they create a VoiceThread in the Course View.

Option 1: Create a Pecha Kucha Assignment
Note: this option requires the instructor to select the Pecha Kucha option in the assignment settings
- Create a new assignment in Canvas and select External Tool as the submission type. Click the Find button and select VoiceThread from the list of tools. Check the box that reads Load This Tool In A New Tab to ensure the assignment opens on a full page.
- Choose the Assignment Builder activity type, then select Create.
- In the assignment settings, set the required number of comments to 1 Exact and the number of slides to 20 Exact (this will allow students to record one continuous audio comment as the slides advance).
- Next, check the box that reads When recording, automatically advance to the next slide after, then select 20 Seconds (Pecha Kucha Format).
- If you want students to see and comment on each other's submissions, check the box to Open Student Gallery.
- To have grades in VoiceThread pass back to the Canvas grade book, ensure you enter the correct point value in the settings.
- Complete the remaining setup and click Publish.
- The final view in Canvas will have a button to launch the VoiceThread assignment in a new window.
Instructions for Students Completing a Create Pecha Kucha Assignment (Add to Canvas Assignment)
- Click on the Load [Assignment Name] in a New Window button at the bottom of the Canvas assignment page.
- Click Start Assignment and choose the source from which you would like to upload or import your slides.
- Open the first slide, click the chat bubble on the bottom left, and select the audio comment option to begin recording. The slides will automatically advance after 20 seconds.
- When you are finished recording, click Stop Recording, then click Save.
- Once you have met the requirements for the assignment, you will see checkmarks next to each item in your to-do list. Click the Submit button on the right to complete your assignment.
Option 2: Create a Course View Assignment
Note: this option requires the student to select the Pecha Kucha option in their presentation settings
- Create a new assignment in Canvas and select External Tool as the submission type. Click the Find button and choose VoiceThread from the list of tools. Click the box that reads Load This Tool In A New Tab to ensure the assignment opens on a full page.
- Choose the Course View type, enter the assignment name, and click Publish (Note: you will need to manually enter grades in the Canvas grade book when using Course View).
- The final view in Canvas will have a button to launch the Course View assignment in a new window.
Instructions for Students Creating a Pecha Kucha in Course View (Add to Canvas Assignment)
- Open the Canvas assignment and click on the Load [Assignment Name] in a New Window button at the bottom of the page.
- In VoiceThread, click the +Add a VoiceThread button on the top right of the page and choose the source from which you would like to upload or import your slides (you must have 20 slides.
- Once slides are added, click on Settings and check the box that reads When recording, automatically advance to next slide after, then select 20 Seconds (Pecha Kucha Format).
- Open the first slide, click the chat bubble on the bottom left, and select the audio comment option to begin recording. The slides will automatically advance after 20 seconds.
- When you are finished recording, click Stop Recording, then click Save.
- Once you have met the requirements for the assignment, click the Share with Course button to submit your assignment.
