Stacked assignments are the most commonly requested feature in VoiceThread, and we're so excited that they're finally here!
Starting August 15, 2025, everyone with an integrated VoiceThread license will be able to build stacked assignments in their courses.
What are stacked assignments?
They're just assignments that work together to create a multilayered and richer experience for students. If you use VoiceThread assignments in your LMS already, you know that you can ask students to create a VoiceThread and submit it. You can even allow them to view classmates' submissions in the Student Gallery. But many instructors want to go a step beyond that and require students to comment on classmates' submissions for a grade.
What types of assignments can be stacked?
All stacked assignments at this point are "comment" type assignments. You can require students to comment on:
- VoiceThreads their classmates submitted in a previous "create" assignment
- A VoiceThread from a previous "comment" assignment (for example, reply to another student's original comment)
- A VoiceThread from a previous "watch" assignment
How do you create a stacked assignment?
Just build a "comment" assignment like you normally would. When you get to the step where you decide what students need to comment on, you'll see the option to choose a previous assignment. Just select the assignment you want students to interact with, and then finish setting up the assignment as you normally would.
Bonus features
In addition to stacked assignments, we're throwing in a couple of extra goodies on August 15.
- Student Gallery Controls: Decide when you want students to see the student gallery: before they submit, after they've submitted, or only after you've graded them.
- One Conversation: Enable the "one conversation" setting in assignments just like you can in stand-alone VoiceThreads.
