Setting up VoiceThread Assignments Using the Assignment Builder

VoiceThread's Assignment Builder function allows instructions to create a graded assignment requiring students to create, comment on, or watch a VoiceThread. This activity is linked to the Canvas Gradebook.


NOTE: A VoiceThread assignment page has been added to the template with the VoiceThread Instructions for students. You may edit the VoiceThread assignment, give it a new Assignment Name and start at Step 7 below.

Steps to Create a VoiceThread Assignment

  1. On the Modules page click on the plus (+) sign to add assignment.
  2. Select Add Assignment.
    1. Click on Create Assignment.
    2. Add Assignment Name.
    3. Click Add item.

  3. The Assignment will be placed at the bottom of the current Module.
  4. Click on the Assignment link to launch the Assignment Page.
  5. Click on Edit.
  6. Copy the Student VoiceThread Instructions below and paste into the Assignment area:

Follow these instructions on how to:

  • use the VoiceThread Course View link
  • navigate to your personal JHU VoiceThread account from VoiceThread Course View
  •  start creating VoiceThreads
  • share VoiceThreads with your VoiceThread course group
  1. Update Points, Assignment Group and ensure Display Grade as is Points.

  2. Move down to Submission Type and change selection to External Tool, put a checkmark in Load this Tool in a New Tab, and then click on Find.

    1. A Configure External Tool window will open. Move down and click on VoiceThread.

    2. The VoiceThread window will open. Select Assignment Builder.

    3. The Assignment Builder Window will open. Click on Create and add all the elements for the assignment. See next step for the Assessment Settings to apply before publishing.

    4. Before Publishing the assignment, Change the Assessment options to Points and then enter the total number of points possible (the points should match Step 3 above). This step allows the VoiceThread grade to pass back to the Gradebook. Instructors will need to grade in VoiceThread, but they will not have to manually add the Grade to Canvas. As a note, VoiceThread submissions will not show in SpeedGrader.

    5. Click on Publish. The window will close and return to the Configure External Tool Window. If you see a URL in the window, your assignment has been created. Click on Select to add the VoiceThread Assignment to the Assignment Page (you will not be able to see the VoiceThread Assignment yet).

    6. Finish updating the Assign Box and then Save the VoiceThread Assignment.

    7. The final view should look like the image below (or some variation if additional instructions for the assignment are added) and will have a button to launch the assignment in a new tab.
