Groups can be used to allow students to work together on group projects and assignments. Groups can be set up and managed through the People tab in your course.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Group Sets
To create student groups, you must first create a group set. Group Sets are collections of Groups. Instructors can create multiple Group Sets in their course to accommodate different combinations of students for different projects. Each Group Set will contain the appropriate number of groups between which the students should be assigned.
Note: A student can only be assigned toone Group within a Group Set.
Creating a Group Set
- Click on People in the course navigation.
- Click +Group Set in the top right corner.
- Set the name and options for your group set, and then click Save.
Creating Groups in a Group Set
After creating a group set, you will be taken to the tab for the new group set. If you chose the "Split students into __ groups" option, groups will have already been created for you, and students will have been randomly assigned.
- To manually create a new group, click +Group.
- Name the group and optionally limit the number of members to a group, then click Save.
A Note on Group Names: Use descriptive group names that are specific to your course. When students access groups from the groups tab in Canvas, every group the student is a member of is listed on this page. Groups with generic names (Group A, Group 1, etc.) may result in confusion or duplication of group names across courses. Include your course number or name to help avoid confusion. For example, "AS.410.603: Final Project Group A" or “AS.491.700: Peer Writing Group 1”.
Adding Students to Groups
- Click and drag their names to the chosen group from the Group Set page.
