NameCoach Recording Tool - Faculty Set Up

This article provides instructions on how to use the NameCoach Recording Tool in JHU Canvas. The tool allows for students and faculty to voice preferred pronunciations of their names within select systems such as Canvas.

Important:  Faculty and students are able to record their names using this feature. The tool must be enabled in the Course Navigation Settings. Once the feature is on, recordings can be played in the NameCoach tool. Updates to a recording update every instance in which the NameCoach tool is used in Canvas.


Accessing the NameCoach Recording Tool via Course Navigation 

  1. Click on the Name Coach Recording Tool in the left-side navigation of your Canvas course. If asked, click Authorize to give NameCoach access to your account.
  2. If listed as a Teacher, you user has the ability to request a student's recording via NameCoach. 
  3. To update or change your recording, click Your Recording or above the roster where RecordName or Update can be found. 
  4. To update the latest recordings uploaded to NameCoach, click Synchronize Course Roster below Your Recording.

Setting up a NameCoach Assignment In Canvas 


  1. Navigate to the Course settings and click the + Assignment button under the Assignments tool.
  2. Enter the title for the assignment and instructions in the fields provided. 
  3. Under the options for Submissions Type, select External Tools then the Find button. 
  4. A pop-up window with a list of options will appear. Scroll through the list to find the NameCoach Recording Tool. Press Select. 
  5. Click Save to publish the assignment and make it available to students. Note: There is no grade sync option when recording.
